a down-sized and more carry-friendly version of its Edge pistol, now complete with an innovative compensator.

The new FN 509 CC Edge – with the “CC” standing for Compact Compensated rather than a tribute to the “Ma” Rainey/Elvis song – ships standard with a quick-detach self-indexing comp. FN says it significantly decreases felt recoil – by as much as 25 percent – while preserving the 7.5-inch pistol’s ability to carry concealed.

The CC Edge uses a 4.2-inch barrel, rather than the legacy 1911-sized FN 509 LS Edge’s 5-inch barrel, but retains many of the latter’s hallmarks, including a precision flat-faced trigger, a low-profile optics mounting system, in-mold-stippled frame texture, and lightening-cut slide – the last feature is to allow faster follow-up shots.

FN America is enhancing its Edge Series with its all-new FN 509 CC Edge, which builds on the tactical features showcased in the company’s 509 LS Edge while providing an easy-to-shoot and concealable package for self-defense.

Equipped with a shortened frame and slide, the FN 509 CC Edge measures just 7.5″ long and is equipped with a 4.2″ barrel topped off with FN’s self-indexing compensator, which is claimed to reduce muzzle flip by as much as 25 percent.

This makes it easier to get back on target, ensuring fast, accurate follow-up shots. One of the stand-out features of the new pistol is its barrel, which is treated with a gold titanium-nitride finish that doesn’t just look good, it also reduces friction and fouling build-up. The gold-colored barrel is visible through lightening cuts in the slide, which reduce weight and speed up slide cycling.

Also found at the top end of the gun is FN’s Low-Profile Optics Mounting System, and four adapter plates are included with each gun, enabling owners to mount most popular micro red-dots on the market. This mounting system is paired with a set of suppressor-height iron sights, which can be co-witnessed with a mounted optic. The front sight features a bright-green, fiber-optic tube that’s easily visible for accurate shooting.

Each FN 509 CC Edge includes a flat-faced trigger with a built-in safety blade, as well as an ambidextrous slide-stop lever and single-sided, reversible magazine release. A three-slot Picatinny accessory rail on the frame makes it easy to add lights and lasers.

The CC Edge ships with a single 12-round magazine and two 15-round magazines, all of which are equipped with weighted aluminum base pads to ensure magazines drop quickly and freely, enabling users to get the gun back into action quickly. Two interchangeable backstraps are also included. The gun weighs 25.5 ozs., unloaded.

Other features include an oversized, knurled mag release that is reversible, an ambidextrous slide stop, and a polished chamber and feed ramp. The FN 509 CC Edge includes one 12-round and two 15-round magazines with machined aluminum base pads, or three 10-round mags in restricted states. It also ships with four MRD mounting plates and two interchangeable backstraps in a ballistic case.

MSRP on the FN 509 CC Edge is $1,569. This puts it in rough competition with the SIG Sauer P365XL Spectre Comp with the benefit that the comp on the FN pistol can be removed and offers a wider range of MRD footprints.

The quick-detach compensator utilizes a self-indexing design. It effectively mitigates recoil for faster shot recover, according to FN. The compensator increases performance by reducing muzzle rise by around 25 percent, according to FN. It decreases felt recoil, while still maintaining concealed carry traits. The system utilizes V-style ports on either side; the vector gases and flash out of the shooter’s field of view.

FN machines the compensator from stainless steel. It comes coated with a graphite-colored PVD finish for durability and hard use. All the while, the system maintains the factory FN 509 recoil spring.

Innovative Compensator System

The 509 CC Edge comes with a 12-round and two 15-round magazines. Each mag features machined aluminum base pads, weighted and sure to fall free from the grip frame during a reload. The 4.2-inch cold hammer-forged barrel sports a recessed target crown and striking gold Titanium Nitride PVD coating. The coating delivers increased lubricity, hardness and wearing, and it flat-out looks bad ass through the slide cuts.

Concealed Carry Features

The pistol also comes optics-ready, utilizing FN’s Low-Profile Optics-Mounting System. It accommodates more than 10 MRDs. A green fiber-optic front sight and low-glare blacked out rear sight co-witness with most optics. Inside, the pistol includes the FN Edge Series fire control group. FN says it increases speed and accuracy, a flat-faced trigger with a 90-degree break and capable of a 5-pound trigger pull.

The 509 CC Edge stands out in its aesthetics as well. It delivers a mix of slide lightening cuts and in-mold stippled frame texturing. The gold-finished barrel highlights the aggressive styling. A reversible magazine release and ambidextrous slide release brings utility for all users. Interchangeable backstraps enables a semi-custom fit.

Now that every gun company has introduced a high-capacity, ultra compact carry pistol — it seems many are extending their lines with models that include compensators of some kind from the factor to tame the snappy recoil of the tiny 9mm pistols. You can head to any of the socials and argue endlessly about what kind of compensator works best, if they work at all, and if they belong on a carry gun. Whatever.

We’re just here for the cool new hardware, and FN America just released a sweet-looking carry pistol in the new FN 509 Compact Compensated CC Edge handgun — and yes, the name is too long. The CC stands for Compact Compensated, so we can just call it the FN 509 CC Edge.

The signature feature of this new extension of the popular FN 509 line is its auto-indexing proprietary FN compensator, which the manufacturer says cuts muzzle flip by 25%, allowing for faster and more accurate follow-up shots, even with hot 9mm self-defense loads.

The comp also decreases felt recoil while being small enough to preserve the handgun’s concealability. It features V-style ports on either side to vent gases and flash out of the user’s field of view, while also combating recoil and flip for flatter, more controlled shooting with a consistent sight picture, according to FN.

The compensator itself is machined from stainless steel and coated with a graphite-colored PVD finish for durability.

The big pain in the ass with compensated handguns is usually that they require at least one or two extra steps to field strip the gun, and then many have to be timed exactly when reattaching so they index in the proper position — FN says they designed the new CC Edge to be easier and “faster than any other compensated pistol” to disassemble for maintenance, and no tools are required. Simply push in and twist the comp 90 degrees and remove — it’s that easy. Reattaching it is just as easy — no tools, no shims.

The handgun features FN’s patented Low-Profile Optics Mounting System, so it’s ready out-of-the-box to accept micro red-dot sights, which is practically becoming a standard feature for carry guns these days.

The slide features three lightening cuts on either side to ensure the pistol cycles reliably with the compensator and to show off that TiN barrel finish.

At first blush, this handgun looks awesome, and the FN 509 pistol line has proven to be an extremely durable and reliable 9mm pistol platform — but there are a few features that might give concealed carriers pause. A compensator is great and objectively useful, but they have gaps and holes where junk and crud can get stuck, even when an EDC pistol is pretty much always in a holster.

The addition of a compensator resulting in less felt recoil in a semi-auto pistol also means there’s less force being exerted on the slide for each shot — which is why FN removed material from the slide body with the lightening cuts on each side. This makes it lighter and allows it to cycle fully under less force.

There are a lot of people who flat out refuse to carry a gun with any lightening cuts in the slide thanks to horror stories about foreign objects getting wedged between the slide and the barrel and causing serious malfunctions. But, that’s a risk each concealed carrier has to weigh. If the gun is truly as flat-shooting and light kicking as FN says it is, the concessions and extra steps in the daily EDC check might be worth it for improved accuracy and faster shooting.
