The Glock 17 was the first semi-automatic pistol that Glock produced. This pistol paved the way for many modern designs by showing that a polymer-frame striker-fired pistol could be reliable. Introduced in 1982, the G17 was developed to participate in the Austrian Ministry of Defense pistol trials. The trials’ goal was to replace the aging Walther P38s left over from World War II with a modern design that was safer while maintaining the 9×19 mm Parabellum chambering in a semi-automatic handgun.
Glock assembled a team of handgun experts in the civilian, military, and police spheres in order to develop the pistol they would submit to the trials. Ultimately they came up with a design that used modern synthetic materials (polymers) combined with previously used design features. This resulted in an economically efficient pistol that used proven pistol designs in addition to modern manufacturing practices. The 17th patent for the pistol (from which it derives its name) was submitted to the trial early in 1982.
It was able to pass the testing procedures and was adopted by Austria as the P80 pistol for both the police and the military. This adoption set up the G17 for world wide recognition. It had managed to beat eight other pistol designs from many well known manufacturers such as FN Herstal, Beretta, SIG Sauer, and Heckler & Koch.
This led to many European states and the U.S. to consider adopting this new style of pistol. The world was currently testing many different styles of 9mm pistols during the growth of the “Wonder 9” style of handgun. These were pistols chambered in 9 mm with almost double the capacity of a single stack gun and better controllability than other more powerful pistols.
In the middle of it all was the G17. This pistol set the stage for modern handguns designs as we know them. One of the first commercially viable polymer-framed handguns, the G17 and Glock’s other models set the standard for modern self-defense and duty pistols. From capacity to reliability, the G17 set the baseline of performance and many today consider it one of the gold standards of service pistols.
This is because it is easy to maintain, less complex than other designs, and is easy to train on. There are no complicated external safeties. Instead, Glock decided to rely on internal safeties and safeties integrated into the trigger to ensure that the gun only went off when the pistol was fired correctly.
As time went on, the G17 and other Glock designs were refined, this meant tweaking the designs and improving the performance of the pistol while removing any problems that arose from long term testing. This has resulted in multiple generations of Glocks. The first generation of Glocks ran from 1982 to 1988 and featured the original non-checkered front strap and pencil barrel. Gen 1 Glocks with this narrower barrel are rare and highly collectible.
Gen 2 Glocks featured the addition of checkering to the grip, an integrated recoil spring assembly, some magazine modifications, and a steel plate with the serial number stamped onto it in the receiver to meet ATF regulations.
Gen 3 Glocks were the first to feature an accessory rail under the pistol. This generation was released in 1998 and now allowed for the addition of tactical lights, lasers, and other compatible attachments. Additionally, a thumb rest and finger grooves were included on the Gen 3 frames. The frames came in a variety of colors including black, flat dark earth, olive drab, and brighter colors (used to indicate training or dummy pistols).
The G17 and the G19 were two of the only models to be issued immediately on the release of the 5th generation of Glock pistols.
Glock 17 Standard Features & Specs
The G17 is a short-recoil, locking-breech pistol derived from the locking system found on Browning Hi-Powers. Instead of the Hi-Power’s external hammer/firing pin combination, the G17 features an internal striker that is cocked by the trigger springs in two stages. This design helps prevent negligent discharges, but produces a less-crisp trigger than other designs.
The frame is made from Polymer 2 and is one of the more recognizable aspects of the G17. The other aspect being the square slide design, which made machining the slide easier.
All G17 models can accept double stack magazines and there is even a 10 round compliance magazine for those locations that have a magazine capacity restriction. Other pistol designs, like the G19 can use G17 magazines.
The sights come in three different styles: polymer, steel, and Glock Night Sights (GNS). All but the GNS use a “Ball and cup” sighting system. This style of sight consists of a front sight dot that has to be placed into a squared “U” shaped rear sight. The GNS on the other hand features a traditional tritium three-dot system. On top of this a new alternative has been added to the market, the MOS. The Glock Modular Optics System (MOS) allows you to mount a red dot sight to the gun with the appropriate floor plate.

GLOCK 17 Gen 3 9mm Pistol Review
Update 2020: This GLOCK 17 review is written about a 3rd generation model. The 3rd gen G17 is not so different from the 5th generation of guns produced today. A few features have been added, a few minor changes made. The Gen 5 has a different barrel twist, a flared magwell, a stippled grip with no finger grooves. It remains a flagship pistol of the GLOCK company.
This is the pistol that started it all. The GLOCK 17 9mm polymer framed pistol. The original first generation guns were superb and through the third generation remain the excellent, dependable and seemingly supernaturally durable pistols that they have been from the start.
The frame of this gun is the same frame that the GLOCK 22 is built on, consequently most accessories for the G22 fit the G17. Sights and holsters in particular are abundant and all fit either gun.
The G17 fits easily in my average sized hand, and is easy to aim, get on target and get back on target once the shot is fired. The gun has a low bore axis and points and aims naturally. It is also a full size handgun which makes it a particularly soft shooter of the 9mm load.
My GLOCK 17 is unmodified and is great right out of the box. The gun is very accurate (more accurate than I am capable of taking advantage of) and has the potential to make a “rescue shot” with the factory sights in hands capable of pulling that off.
That’s not to say that it would not be to the advantage of any GLOCK owner to replace the terrible plastic sights that come on them. A set of TruGlo or Meprolight sights are well worth the investment.
This G17 is moderately priced like all GLOCKS and is one of the best values in the gun market, not only for the gun which will outlast most owners, but also for the economical 9mm ammo it shoots.
Like all third generation GLOCKS it has an accessory rail for a flashlight. I never have figured out why anybody would mount something on their gun that would show their enemy where to shoot at night. In any case, you can if you want to.
GLOCK 17’s are one of the most popular guns in stock pistol divisions of both IDPA and IPSC because of their high capacity and soft shooting accuracy.
And by the way, if you want to carry it. Go ahead. Sure it’s a f
ull size pistol but it carries comfortably in an inside the waistband holster under casual clothes in any weather.
CONCLUSION: If you’re looking into the purchase of a 9mm pistol, there is really no reason not to buy a GLOCK. It will serve you well for decades of shooting and serve you in a variety of ways including recreation, competition and self defense.

The Glock 17 (G17) was first released in 1982, igniting what would turn out to be a revolution in firearms manufacturing and forever changing the world of modern combat handguns. Only overshadowed by it’s younger sibling the Glock 19, the number of G17s in the hands of citizens, police agencies and military units world-wide is staggering. And for good reason: only lacking in traditional flair and luster, the Glock 17 pistol is a workhorse that will deliver a lifetime of service.
With this kind of history, I obviously use “long term review” loosely. I can reasonably guarantee that there are first generation G17s with thirty years and hundreds of thousands of rounds down the barrel that are still in use to this day. My third generation review gun has only clocked about 7-8,000 rounds in a period of five years. Again, those numbers aren’t earth shattering, but I can’t think of a another piece of equipment that I have carried nearly every day for five years that has such a pristine service record.
‘Fit and Finish’
Manufactured in 2009, this G17 wears a Tenifer finish that is renowned for its superior corrosion resistance and surface hardness. Sometime in 2012, Glock transitioned to a Nitride finish for their guns, drawing criticism from some fans who say it wears faster and is more prone to surface rust than the Tenifer treatment. Even with the proven Tenifer finish, my G17 shows a healthy amount of holster wear on the edges of the slide. I would actually be disappointed if my G17 didn’t show any character-building markings: it’s a tool not a display piece.
The polymer frame, aside from my chosen grip stippling pattern, is nearly flawless. Although my pistol has never been abused (I’m not a tier one snake eater), it has seen it’s fair share of use in climates ranging from the dry and dusty high plains of Colorado to hot and humid New England Summers. The frame shows no signs of discoloration, cracking or deformation. The frame rails are pristine as are the pistol’s internal components. You would be hard pressed to differentiate between this gun and one that rolled off the assembly line in Smyrna last week.
A quick look at the chamber and rifling shows nothing out of the ordinary except for the fact that I should be a little more diligent in my cleaning regiment. This barrel will outlast my lifetime ammo budget and then some.
Function
I can honestly say that in 7,000+ rounds, that this G17 has not had one malfunction of any kind. It’s a trait that we, as daily carriers, sometimes take for granted in a modern combat pistol, but one that should not be easily overlooked. If you are placing your trust and confidence in a piece of hardware, it should be backed by hard (and personal) evidence.
The majority of the ammunition run through this gun has been a steady diet of Winchester Ranger 147gr JHP, Federal HST 124gr and 147gr JHP and surplus +P FMJ. This Glock 17 is a true omnivore when it comes to ammo types and has yet to experience one hiccup.
Probably the most contested feature on Glock pistols is the trigger. Granted, the G17’s trigger is no where near as buttery smooth as a custom tuned 1911. And rightly so, since Glock’s Safe Action System negates the need for an external safety. Having said that, the Glock trigger just works for me; it’s crisp with a defined reset that allows for fast and accurate follow up shots. Obviously trigger pull weight and feeling is a matter of personal preference, but I have yet to find a trigger that’s works as well for me on a carry gun as the 5.5lb stock Glock trigger.
The second, let’s say controversial, feature of Glock pistols is the grip angle. And I will relent and agree that the grip critics do have a point. The learning curve (and the angle of the grip) is steep. Many new Glock owners tend to shoot a little high with the muzzle pointing slightly upward.
This is nothing that can’t be overcome with training and I have actually come to prefer the angle of the grip. Pushing the muzzle of the pistol down tightens up my wrist and makes for a solid and stable shooting position. Full disclosure, I did decide to go with a professional grip reduction and stippling pattern from Glock Center Texas that allows me to better position my giant hands around the grip. I probably would have skipped this step if I bought a fourth generation G17 with swappable backstraps.
The longer overall length, the added weight of a larger gun and the 9×19 cartridge makes the G17 a flat shooting gun with just a little muzzle rise even under fast strings of fire. It’s not uncommon for me to be able to accurately place three aimed shots, drawing from the holster, in less than two seconds. I’m not a competition shooter, but that’s a decent split time for that stage of fire using full power loads.
Carrying the G17
I don’t believe Glock had concealed carry in mind when they engineered the G17. It was designed more for uniform/open carry mainly because of it’s slide and grip length. Although, with the right holster and body type, the G17 is a more than decent carry piece. If you are smaller in stature, the equally iconic Glock 19 is probably a better fit as it shaves about an inch on either end. My gun has the additional bulk of a weapon light, a Surefire x300, which I believe is a must-have for any combat handgun.
My G17 has spent its entire working life housed in a Raven Concealment Phantom holster except for the rare occasion when it rides in a Safariland drop-leg. With the literally hundreds of holster options on the market, Raven still rises to the top and complements the G17 nicely. Someday I will do a long term review on Raven’s offerings because they really are top notch.
Getting past the bulk of a full size gun, the G17 truly is an awesome weapon to be able to carry around as a defensive handgun. With a standard capacity of 17 plus one in the chamber, I rarely find myself carrying a spare magazine on my body. With my setup, the Glock Center Texas adds an extra two or three rounds. That’s a decent amount of firepower for a concealed handgun. One side benefit of the Grip Reduction and Stippling: Business End Customs
Magazine Baseplates: Glock Center Texas baseplates is that their smooth aluminum surface gives an anti-snag quality to the gun when carrying under a shirt or a jacket.
Final thoughts
I firmly believe that there is no perfect defensive handgun. Every shooter is going to have their own priorities and will be forced to make compromises based on their personal situation. For me, the G17 is probably as close as it gets to being my all around favorite.
Some of that belief is based on intangible characteristics that give you that feeling of confidence whether you are gripping the G17 or just knowing that it is on your hip. Either way, it’s a classic pistol with a solid history and every gun aficionado should have one in their arsenal whether or not you choose to make it your go-to defensive weapon.
