The USP (Universelle Selbstladepistole or \”universal self-loading pistol\”) is a semi-automatic pistol developed in Germany by Heckler & Koch GmbH (H&K) of Oberndorf am Neckar, as an alternative for the P7 series of handguns. One of the most important features of the USP is the mechanical recoil reduction system. This system is incorporated into the recoil spring assembly, which is positioned below the barrel and contains a heavy, captive coil spring around the guide rod. This is designed exclusively to buffer the slide and barrel while reducing recoil impact on the pistol parts. This system often lowers the recoil forces felt by the shooter by nearly 30%. The USP recoil reduction system is insensitive to ammunition types, but does not need adjusting or maintenance, and functions efficiently in all USP models. Utilizing this type of same recoil reduction method, the related H&K Mk 23/.45 ACP pistol fired more than 30,000 high pressure (+P) cartridges, plus an additional 6,000 proof loads, without deterioration or excessive wear to any primary elements.
