The 5.56 mm AK102 is a short version of the AK101, using NATO 5.56×45 mm cartridges popular around the globe.
The AK102 is based on the classic AK pattern, traditionally reliable in adverse conditions and easy to use by personnel with any level of training.
This model is part of the AK10x series, with all the wooden parts replaced by plastic ones and a side rail scope mount.

Compared to the AK-101 and AK-103, which are full-size rifles of similar design, the AK-102, 104, and 105 feature shortened barrels that make them a middle ground between a full rifle and the more compact AKS-74U. Whereas the AK-10x rifles have longer barrels, full-length gas pistons, and solid, side-folding polymer stocks, the AKS-74U is shorter, and features a skeleton stock.
The rifle’s receiver is made of stamped steel. The magazine is lighter, and more durable than older models, being made out of reinforced fiberglass. The buttstock is made of shock-resistant polymer and folds in order to be better used from vehicles or on the move.
Why do the AK-101 and AK-102 cost so much more than the other variants?
The AK-102 uses an adjustable notched rear tangent iron sight calibrated in 100 m (109 yd) increments from 100 to 500 m (109 to 547 yd). The front sight is a post adjustable for elevation in the field. Horizontal adjustment is done by the factory or armory before issue. The AK-102 has a muzzle booster derived from the AKS-74U.
The 100-series AKs are produced by the Izhmash factories in Izhevsk, Russia.

This project is about breaching the barriers in the world of small arms and having an open mind to cooperation, technologies and standardization. All the design and material solutions implemented in the AK-102 are common for the 100th series of Kalashnikov Rifles. The AK-102 is a short barrel version with a modified flash hider and a folding buttstock (made of shock-resistant polymer) which allows the shooter to use it from vehicles on the move.
The Kalashnikov AK-102, AK-104 and AK-105 rifles are essentially similar to one another, being different only in the caliber and type of magazine used. All three are ‘compact’ versions of the 5.56mm AK-101, 7.62mm AK-103 and 5.45mm AK-74M, respectively. The main visible differences between those ‘Hundredth series compact assault rifles’ and earlier 5.45mm AKS-74U compact assault rifle are that ‘Hundred series’ rifles use somewhat longer barrels and full length gas pistons, as opposed to shorter AKS-74U, and solid, side-folding polymer stocks. In fact, other than shorter barrels with special muzzle devices (flash / blast reducers) those compact rifles are similar in details to their respective full-size variants.

This “compact” members of AK-10x family designed primary for comercial sales outside of Russia, so all three most common “assault rifle” calibers are represented. This series has better characteristics than AKS-74U, mostly because of lenghten barrel.
The AK-102 was designed for close quarters combat, and is commonly used by special forces and police. The rifles shorter barrel aids in clearing buildings and navigating tight spaces.
The rifle is produced by Russia’s leading small arm manufacturer Izhmash Small Arms. They produce four other variations of the rifle in different calibers, barrel lengths, and weights. The AK-102 comes with cleaning kit, oil bottle, and bayonet.
The AK-102 is chambered in 5.56 NATO and features black synthetic furniture, with a side folding stock. The side folding stock looks just like a normal fixed stock, however it folds and locks securely to the side of the receiver. Assault Rifle
Like the AK-101 before it, the AK-102’s firing action revolves around a gas-actuated, rotating bolt system. Feed is from a 30-round detachable fiberglass box magazine. Rate of fire is listed at 600 rounds per minute with a muzzle velocity of 2,789 feet per second. Maximum range is 500 meters.
The AK-102 is currently in operational service with a few armed forces that have already taken advantage of the base AK-101 series.

| AK-102 is a small size assault rifle chambered for 5.56 x 45 mm standard NATO cartridge. It’s design is very similar to AKS-74U small size assault rifle. It is built on well recommended Kalashikov’s assault rifles scheme, that inherited all the best qualities threw more than 50 years during AK assault rifle families modernization. AK-102 is intended to use by the secondary units such as supply, communication, tanks and artillery crews, staff personnel. It’s predecessor was successfully used by Russian Federation ministry of internal affairs special forces in anti-terrorist, criminal arrest or other operations which required ordinary assault rifle with a smaller dimensions. AK-102 is suitable to be used by anti-terrorist special forces or airborne troops.

AK-102 has plastic folding butt stock. Last mentioned has a number of advantages comparing with metal frame butt stocks used with AKS-74U. Firstly it has even lighter weight then metal-one. Secondly it cannot be deformed in case of falling or hitting tight surfaces, what sometimes happened with earlier used metal frame butt stocks. Thirdly it has additional field toolkit placed inside. Furthermore new plastic stock is easier to use: it doesn’t clings with equipment or uniform. Assault rifle has opened 500 m range sight, with gradation on every 100 m. Muzzle sight is built-in gas chamber. Rifle has also ability to be used with optical or a night sight.
AK-102 can be used with 40-mm underbarrel grenade launcher or knife-bayonet. Last mentioned is completed with the rifle. The AK-102 has new, more effective flame-hider which lowers rifles tossing after each shot. Standard flame-hider can be replaced with onetime PBS sound suppressor, serving for about 30 shots. The muzzle of either weapon fits into the swiveling firing points of the standard Russian armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles. Thus, the infantryman can fire the weapon while the vehicle is moving.
During producer’s tests AK-102 assault rifle showed really high reliability characteristics. Assault rifles stayed 10 000 – 15 000 shots and fire have been ending in case of fully weared-off barrel. Behind the scenes
The AK-102 appears in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, where it is the almost exclusive standard weapon of the militia soldiers in the Middle East, as well as Solid Snake’s first in-game firearm (acquired through varying methods in-game). However, even with the GP30 — its only attachment — it is inferior to the M4 Custom in terms of flexibility, due to its customizable nature.
Available for 1000 DP in Metal Gear Online, the AK-102 has very high recoil when used with no Assault Rifle+ skill level equipped. Without the Assault Rifle+ skill, the AK-102 should only be used in short-bursts or at close range. The AK-102 can be customized with a GP-30 grenade launcher for 10,000 DP, on top of the original 1000. This gun has relatively high damage capabilities, though still not on the same league as the 20-round battle rifles.
